Honoring African Americans in Queens

About this event

In observance of Juneteenth, we'll ride through Queens to visit places honoring African Americans, well known and ordinary citizens. We meet in Cunningham Park in the parking lot at Union Turnpike and 196th Place. The first stop is along the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway at the Johnson Burial Ground, a family plot in Bayside.

From there we head up to Flushing Cemetery to honor the jazz great Louis D. Armstrong and his wife Lucille. Across the street from Flushing Cemetery is the The Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground where many people of African American and Native American descent of Flushing were buried.

We'll then head to north of downtown Flushing to visit the house of an African American inventor Lewis Latimer. From there, we'll head to Corona to see the house of Louis D. Armstrong after which we'll stop at the club favorite, the Empanada Cafe, to pick up lunch and then head into Flushing Meadow Park to picnic.

After lunch in the park we head south into Kew Gardens to visit the house of Ralph Bunche. From there, on the way back to Cunningham Park, we'll stop at a Triangle in Jamaica Hills honoring a fallen fire fighter Bernard A. Tepper.
