RIDE DESCRIPTIONS

Helmets are required on all Club rides. Electronic bikes are not allowed on any rides, however, pedal assist bicycles are permitted. Additionally, the Club does not permit the use of aero-bars on any of its rides. Failure to comply with the aforementioned requirements can result in immediate disqualification from any 5BBC ride.

Ride classifications noted below are according to general guidelines for pace. The ride leader pace range may be used within any classification. For example 12-15 indicates that the leader pace will be between 12 and 15 mph, but not faster than 15. The ride average is based on the average speed of the ride over the entire ride. This includes decelerating and accelerating, slow pedaling, hills, riding against the wind, and traffic conditions. No ride maintains the stated pace throughout the whole ride. To achieve the ride average, at times the speed may be at the top of the range for several miles. The maximum pace, unless otherwise noted by the ride leader, is what a rider can expect to maintain when all road conditions prevail.

Happy Face Rides: Just starting to get into cycling or perhaps you're nervous about riding in the city? These rides are low mileage and go at a leisurely pace between 8-12 mph. They generally have point, drop, sweep and everyone rides together in a group. There may be frequent rest stops and the group will wait for cyclists. Great for anyone who enjoys short distances at a casual pace.

Moderate Rides: Do you like to cycle and still see the sights? These rides range from 12-15 mph with point, drop, sweep. Suitable for moderate as well as advance-riders who want more of a touring pace.

Advance Rides: Like to challenge yourself without getting so out of breath that you can't carry on a conversation with the cyclists near you? These rides are 15-17 mph with or without point, drop, sweep. Suitable for advance-riders looking to see the scenery, but not dawdle. Good choice for riders who want to ride longer distances and or at faster paces.

Quick Spin Rides: Not for the faint of heart! These rides are 17-20+ mph with minimal stops and no point, drop, sweep. Advance cyclists and above need only apply. Distances can vary from 25 miles to over 75+. The terrain may be rolling, hilly, to very hilly.

Please follow the above guidelines to help ensure an enjoyable and safe ride for everyone on the ride. Pick a ride within your capability. If unsure what that is, go on a ride in the next lower classification from the one you think you can handle. Do not force the pace on a ride that is too easy for you. Or, force a group ride to slow down if it is too difficult. Those who ride ahead of the leader are on their own. Notify the leader if you plan to leave the ride along the way.

Arrive 10-15 minutes before the start time so the ride can leave on time. Make sure your bike is in proper working order BEFORE you arrive; leaders are not expected to be mechanics. Carry a spare tube(s), tools to fix a flat, patch kit, pump, nutrition, and at least one water bottle. Again, helmets are required.

Leaders are expected to follow the advertised pace. Leaders may dismiss from the ride anyone whose actions endanger other riders. Check the Club’s website and your email at least two hours before the start time for any changes or, for a go/no go decision in case of questionable weather or road conditions.

In summation, be prepared to honor the pace of the ride that you have signed up for. Helmets are required. Without one you will not be allowed to participate. Do not pass the ride leader.
