[Note new start time of 9:30 am, after the Blessing of the Bikes.] Travel through scenic Yonkers, NY, with scenic river and valley views, secluded rail trails and bustling city streets. On the way we'll visit historic sites not usually promoted by the Chamber of Commerce: two enslaved labor agricultural settlements (yes, we had plantations in New York in the 18th century), a few landmarks of Yonkers' 27-year long struggle to avoid building public housing in white neighborhoods, and a stop in the enclave of Runyon Heights, one of the only places where Black residents were permitted to buy single-family homes (and where the local streets were designed to keep the neighborhood isolated).
The terrain is hilly but there's no hurry.
The ride meets at Cathedral St. John the Divine (West 112th St & Amsterdam Ave). We'll assemble in front of the church immediately after the Blessing of the Bikes ends.
NOTE: The ride ends at the Van Cortlandt Park subway station (West 242nd Street & Broadway).
