Bike New York's mission is to empower New Yorkers to transform their lives and communities through bicycling. While Bike New York is best known for producing the TD Five Boro Bike Tour and regional rides outside NYC, they operate an extensive free bike education program teaching 30,000 New Yorkers to ride safely. Bike New York provides critical workforce development training to individuals formerly involved with the criminal justice system to be bike mechanics.
Bike New York operates Recycle-A-Bicycle, a community-based bike shop that offers sales and full-service repairs. The bicycles begin as donations and are sold refurbished, typically salvaging 1,800 bicycles annually, diverting about 45,000 pounds of waste. In 2023, Bike New York started a Bicycles for Asylum Seekers program through Recycle-A-Bicycle, refurbishing donated bicycles and distributing them to immigrants providing affordable and accessible transportation.
