There are many types of bridges. There are bascule bridges. There are swing bridges. There are cable stay bridge. There are suspension bridges. And, there are a grand total of four retractile bridges. A retractile bridge opens by sliding diagonally along rail road tracks. Two of these bridges are located in NYC. We're going to see them..
The Carroll Street Bridge is the oldest in the country, built in 1889, It spans the Gowanus Canal, and is the only bridge of this type that continues to function as designed. The other bridge in NYC is the Borden Avenue Bridge. This was built in 1908 and spans Dutch Kills. The Carroll Street bridge is cute and photogenic. The Borden Avenue Bridge is gritty and industrial
This is a 22 mile ride with about 550 feet of elevation. We will be doing it at a Happy Face [but no dawdling] Pace. There will be no lunch stop, but we will visit Cannell at Mile 11 where you can purchase pastries, gelato, or a sandwich.
