It is time for a special ride, in the tradition of the 5BBC a ride that never gets old, a Montauk Century. The 5BBC will be running two very limited registration metric century plus rides to Montauk on May 9th and May 16th. This one on May 9th will be at an advanced pace, but given the time of year and the beauty of the ride, it will be at the lower end of advanced with time to enjoy the gorgeous sights out East on the way to Montauk.
As of the listing date, the LIRR time table for May is not available, so we are going by past history. Please check back to be sure the times have not changed. We leave from the Speonk LIRR station at around 9:45/9:50 am. A train from the city is scheduled to arrive at that time. If driving to the start, please be there no later than 9:30 am so that you are ready to leave when the train arrives. Parking is free at the Speonk station. Note, I will be driving to Speonk and will meet everyone there.
The ride out east to Montauk is quite scenic with incredible homes and numerous water views. We would prefer to stay together as a group with minimal, or no use of point-drop-sweep. Once we get to Montauk, we hope to have enough time for a stop at the Montauk Brewery to celebrate our ride before heading to the LIRR station for the 5:18 pm train back west. Our pace will be steady to be sure we make this train. Please bring a bungee cord to secure your bike on the train.
We will be making a brief food/lunch stop at Goldberg's Bagels in Wainscot. Also bring snacks, plenty of hydration, and an upbeat positive attitude ready to explore and discover. Registration is limited due to LIRR restrictions.
An important caveat - Montauk is a wonderful ride, but if there is a significant wind from the east it becomes in a bunch of places a not so enjoyable slog. If on ride day we are faced with such a scenario, the ride will be materially modified and will not go to Monatuk, but will be an out and back from Speonk into Remensburg, West Hampton, Quogue and Hampton Bays - shorter, but still quite scenic.
History
The Montauk Century is more than a ride—it's a tradition that began in 1964, when cyclists first headed east to the end of Long Island. Stewardship later passed to the AYH Bike Committee—now 5BBC—but the spirit never changed: long roads, committed riders, and the unforgettable roll into Montauk.
Today, as the originator of the Montauk Century, 5BBC continues that legacy with the reimaged Montauk Series, Many Ways to Montauk. Ride it point-to-point, make a weekend of it, or find your own way east. However you get there, the destination and that feeling when you roll into town, remains the same.
