About this event
Bill Mastro created the original route from Ronkonkoma to the Pine Barrens State Preserves. The Pine Barrens are Long Island's most significant wilderness area, and they are the largest remaining portion of a primarily forested area that was once estimated to cover more than a quarter million acres. Clear here to read more about it.
Our 44-mile journey will take us through the Rocky Point Pine Barrens (via paved roads), as well as along its northern and eastern borders. We will also line the western edge of Longwood Pine Barrens Preserve. With the sun setting much earlier in the afternoon (4:44 pm., yikes!), we want to meander through the preserves at peak sunlight. Lunch will be around the 21.5 mile marker.
We will meet at the LIRR Ronkonkoma station at 9:39 a.m. There are trains departing from Atlantic Terminal and Grand Central Madison at 8:04 and 8:10 a.m., respectively, to arrive on time. (However, please confirm departure times closer to the date as schedules are subject to change.) The rubber will meet the road soon thereafter. We will cruise at a pace of 15 mph on the flats. Bring enough hydration and bike nourishment to last the duration of the ride, as well as spare tubes, flat-repairing tools, and front and rear lights. Dress appropriately for the weather.
Click here for the RWGPS route and here for the cue sheet, however, trippers will need to print out their own copies.
