Fireworks over the Atlantic Ocean! We will ride from Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn via Prospect Park, Sunset Park and the Shore Parkway/Belt Parkway bike path to the Coney Island boardwalk to see fireworks, which start at 9:45 pm. After the fireworks are over, we will return to Grand Army Plaza via Bedford Avenue and Prospect Park South.
We’ll leave Grand Army Plaza at 7:45 pm. That should give us enough time to ride to Coney Island and, for those who want, pick up something to eat at one of the stands serving the whole grain, organic, gluten-free vegan food for which Coney Island is so famous. (NOT! Deep-fried anything, sugar and salt, and Nathan’s hot dogs are more its speed.) We’ll probably arrive around 9:00 pm, so you may want to have an early evening snack to tide you over if you are going to have something to eat on the boardwalk.
The ride will be just under 24 miles. This ride will be on some greenways and also on some busy streets. Please be comfortable riding on busy streets. The pace will be Moderate in the front (12-15 mph) and the back will accommodate Happy Face riders (no less than 10 MPH).
We will be riding to Coney Island at dusk and the return trip will be after dark. Headlights and taillights are mandatory on this ride. Check to make sure they are fully charged. I also suggest bringing a reflective vest or reflective suspenders to increase your visibility to distracted motorists.
Helmets are mandatory on 5BBC rides, and water or other hydration is also recommended. You should also bring at least one spare tube. But you might not need sunscreen on this ride. ??
