A Visit to Rufus King - Scout Ride
About this event

Rufus King is the most famous New Yorker you've never heard of. Born in Massachusetts, at 32 he was one of the youngest signers of the US Constitution. He moved to New York on the recommendation of his good friend Alexander Hamilton, and was elected the First Senator from New York. He served for seven years, until he was appointed Ambassador to Great Britain by George Washington. He was also the last Federalist candidate for President - getting crushed by James Monroe. He then returned to the Senate, serving New York until 1825. He was also a staunch anti-slavery activist - having manumitted his own slaves, and calling it a "Nefarious Institution."
Rufus bought property in Rural Jamaica in 1805, as a country estate and farm for his family including a wife and five kids. Over time, he expanded the property to 150 Acres. Today, the house is preserved in Rufus King Park - an oasis of quiet amidst the hustle and bustle of Jamaica.
This is a 24 mile scout ride - as I've never done much of the ride. In other words, there may be an oopsie or two. Lunch will be at either the Trini Roti Shop or the Campeon de Los Pollos. Lunch comes late in the ride at Mile 15 - so bring snacks. Also bring along a sturdy lock as parking is outside on the street. Bring lights as it gets dark fast these days. And of course, bring a spirit of adventure.
