Join us for a spooky pre-Halloween excursion to Sleepy Hollow. Washington Irving, who lived in Tarrytown and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, wrote "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in 1820 about the local area and its fabled phantom, the Headless Horseman. We will ride by and or stop at various points of interest in the area, not least of which will be the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Washington Irving's gravesite, the Headless Horseman Bridge, and the Headless Horseman sculpture. After taking in the sights we will refuel at around mile 28 on Beekman Avenue where there is a pizzeria and a deli a little further up the block.
This will be an advance pace ride (15 mph on the flats) so that we beat nightfall and the goblins that will surely come out. Rain or very cold temps at start cancel. Check your email and the club website before heading out. Make certain your bike is in good working order and bring the familiar accouterments to keep you going: spare tube(s) and tools to fix a flat, hydration, on-bike nutrition, helmet (required), and a spirit of adventure as this is a scout ride. Halloween costumes are not required but are encouraged.
This is a point-to-point ride, which means the start and ending points are not the same. The ride meets up at the Charles Dana Discovery Center at 110th and Malcolm X. Blvd and ends at the #1 train at 242nd Street and Van Cortlandt Park. The route is subject to change as are the sites which are approximate.
