A 26-mile moderate paced ride to savor the food of Yunnan province.

We‘re going to head from Grand Army Plaza to Sunset Park to enjoy the food of Yun Nan Flavour Garden on this 26-mile ride.

Yun Nan Flavour Garden features rice noodles (in soup or separately), seaweed salad, cold noodles with chicken, and dumplings, among other delicious dishes. Their specialty dish is "Crossing the Bridge" noodles. While we have many fine bridges here in the five boroughs, in this case the name refers to a bridge in Yunnan province in southwestern China. And of course, there‘s a story behind that name, which you‘ll learn about on the ride. Since this ride is entirely in Kings County, a/k/a Brooklyn, we won‘t be crossing any famous suspension bridges, but may be crossing a couple little bridges.

Here are some reviews, if you want to read more. Though the reviews are several years old, recent visits confirm that the food is still excellent.

We’ll be fighting off any lingering winter blues with a ride through Westchester. We will start at the Larchmont train station before meandering on mostly low-traffic roads north to the Westchester Airport, where we can pretend we are going somewhere warmer. From the airport, we will be looping back south past Purchase Community College. Near mile 24, we will find our usual pizza stop for lunch. After lunch, we will find our way back to the Larchmont train station

* Moderate pace ride.
* About 25 miles.
* Starts and ends in Grand Army Plaza.

Ideal for new members, as well as Club vets.

Join us for a ride from Grand Army Plaza, through East River parks in Brooklyn and Queens, and through Astoria, Woodside and Jackson Heights, until we arrive at our destination: a 2-block section of Woodside Avenue in Elmhurst with restaurants featuring the food of the Isan region (also spelled Esan and Isaan) of northeast Thailand.

There are more than a half dozen restaurants serving this regional Thai food on these blocks, including Ayada, Hug Esan, Khao Kang, and Zaab Zaab, and several have received favorable media reviews. (Zaab Zaab is in the Times’ 100 best restaurants in 2024). Since there are so many restaurants on these blocks, riders can eat at the restaurant of their choice. Then we will reconvene and resume our ride after an hour.

We will be riding mostly greenways, but there will be a few busy streets, so please be comfortable riding them. The ride will be Moderate in the front and will accommodate Happy Face riders in the rear. Please be able to keep at least 10 MPH in the back.

This fun ride to Nyack eliminates most of the climbs!

How do we do this? By starting on the Manhattan side of the GWB and making our way north on suburban roads with minor inclines. After a Greek lunch at Kavo’s Grill in Nyack (https://www.kavosgrillnyack.com/Default.aspx), we will ride over the Tappan Zee/Cuomo Bridge and go through Tarrytown, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, and Hastings on Hudson before ending the ride in Yonkers, where we will take Metro North back to Grand Central.

A 33-mile ride to the Rockaways at a moderate-lite pace to look for endangered species Piping Plovers and other shore birds.

Join us on a ride to the Rockaways, where we will meet with a Brooklyn Bird Club Walk Leader (and 5BBC member) to look for shore birds who summer on the beach. Among the species we might see are Least Terns, Piping Plovers, American Oyster Catchers, and Black Skimmers. We will loop by riding over the Marine Park Bridge and returning on the Crossbay Bridge.

Piping Plovers are an endangered species. Because of the impact of global warming and encroaching development on nesting areas, there are only about 8000 Piping Plovers left on earth. Some (fewer than 100) spend their summers here in New York City. They will be in the Rockaways in late spring and will stay there until they migrate south in the fall.

When we pause on our ride, we will do a short walk to the beach. We will learn about migration and nesting, how habitat degradation affects breeding, and how volunteer groups and government agencies such as the National Park Service work to protect habitat. We will look for nesting areas of young plovers and their parents. We will bring binoculars to share to enable us to observe the birds from a safe distance. We also encourage riders to bring binoculars (not mandatory).

Will we see plovers this year? We are scheduling the ride to take place when the tide is not too high and the chicks are young so their parents won‘t wander too far from their nests, but there are no guarantees. We missed them in 2021 and 2022, but saw some in 2023 and 2024. We should see other species of shore birds even if we don‘t see any plovers. While walking along the ocean, you may forget that you are within the city limits of one of the largest cities in the world.
