Summer Streets Wraps Up For 2024
Summer Streets wrapped up for 2024 with the Club running simultaneous repair and information tents in the Bronx and in Brooklyn on Saturday, August 24.
Over 50 visitors signed in for repairs on Saturday, not counting the visitors who had tires pumped, flats fixed, chains and gears lubed, or who got our help with minor adjustments.
In addition to bike repairs, many volunteers explained how 5BBC rides work and showed them the many rides of all distances and speeds coming up in the next 10 days. In hearing our volunteers' descriptions of our rides, visitors may have realized that cycling in NYC, when done with other cyclists, a point, a drop, and a sweep, is not as daunting as they might have thought. So our many volunteers really contributed to encouraging cyclists at all levels of experience to engage in safer cycling in New York City and beyond.
Some photos of the Brooklyn event are in this posting, and photos of the Bronx event were posted by Sharon Behnke, Jack de Pagter, Wendy Frank and Alfredo Garcia.
In all, Club mechanics repaired around 365 bicycles this summer in Astoria, Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn, not counting pumping, lubricating and minor adjustments.
We used a new electronic waiver of liability developed by Tia Tyler. It enables visitor information to be uploaded directly into the Club website, and also allows us to track when visitors stopped by and requested repairs, which should allow us to improve scheduling next year.
A list of all 2024 volunteers is below. In assembling this list, I am amazed at how many there were. A couple mechanics were recovering from injuries and were repairing bikes with canes at their sides. Many members volunteered on multiple days. A member reached out to members of other bike clubs. A volunteer drove 200 miles in the middle of the night from his home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. And so many people responded to last-minute pleas to fill gaps in schedules.

If your name is not on this list, you still have a chance to volunteer for the 5BBC this year: we will need a few volunteers at the Brooklyn Bike Jumble in Park Slope on Saturday, September 14, and you can volunteer for it. Information about the Jumble will be on the 5BBC website very soon.
