Bike Mechanics 101: Shoutout to Steve Bauman and to the Five Boroughs Brewing Co

Eric Brooks | Published on 7/22/2024
The fourth and final Bike Mechanic 101 class of 2024 was held on July 21 at the Five Boroughs Brewing Company’s taproom. This class covered bearings and followed classes in fixing flats, brakes, and derailleurs/gears in June and July.  Short rides from Grand Army Plaza to the class site were co-led by David Jendras.

Taught by the highly knowledgeable and indefatigable Steve Bauman, who has been fixing bikes for more than 40 years, we learned about bearings, derailleurs, gears, cables, brakes and tires this summer. Steve is just getting started – now that he’s taught four Bike Mechanics classes this summer, he’s going to be the Lead Mechanic at the 5BBC’s tent at Manhattan Summer Streets on August 3rd, August 10th and August 17th. So many, many thanks and a huge shout-out to Steve for all he’s done for so many years.

Speaking of shout-outs, the "other" 5BBC – that is, the Five Boroughs Brewing Company – were fabulous hosts, allowing us to set up our classes inside their tap room. They had 16 craft beers on tap, and I think all are brewed on-site, so there's sure to be something to everyone's liking. They also have non-alcohol drinks such as Kampuchea. They have board games for those who just want to hang out for a while.

Five Boroughs Brewing Company's taproom is in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, at 215 47th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. They are open Thursday and Friday afternoons and evenings, and Saturday and Sunday from noon until evening. Many thanks to the Five Boroughs Brewing Company for their gracious hospitality. https://fiveboroughs.com/taproom/
