On a brisk Fall Sunday, we celebrate Halloween by visiting the home of Washington Irving and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery where he is buried. Washington Irving is the famous early 19th century author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” with its infamous character the Headless Horseman.
Instead of a Halloween costume, wear your most colorful and wildest bike jersey. There will be a Prize for the person with the wildest jersey as voted on by the group.
The route is initially on the South County Trail, then winds through suburban streets. We’ll stop at the Sunnyside visitors center. We continue North to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Inside is the Old Dutch Reformed Church, where Mr. Irvington’s book states that the Headless Horseman is “buried” in its graveyard. We’ll walk up the path to view the grave of Washington Irving.
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Tour
It may be possible for us to take the one hour guided tour of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery which focuses on the Washington Irving and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The tour begins at 1:00 and costs $22.00 each. Tickets purchase will depend on rider interest and ticket availability. I will contact all registered riders by e-mail to see who would like to take the tour. If enough riders want to take the tour I will buy tickets for the group, if they’re available. Riders can reimburse me for the thickets cost at lunch. For more information about the tour go to https://visitsleepyhollow.com/plan/sleepy-hollow-cemetery-tours/
Afterwards we’ll ride South on Broadway for lunch in Tarrytown, then cruise on the scenic Riverwalk as it winds to Lyndhurst Mansion, where we'll see its Fall outdoor decorations. We’ll then retrace our route to the South County Trail and back to Van Cortland Park.
