We hope you can help out at Summer Streets, which will run from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on August 19, 2023. We need volunteers who can help out for a couple hours to up to a half day.The 5BBC table and repair station will be on Park Avenue South at 25-26th Street, on the east side of Park Ave., in Manhattan.
Summer Streets is a multi-day, annual car-free event. It takes place in Manhattan between the Brooklyn Bridge and 125th Street. That's about eight miles of NYC streets that are open for people to play, run, walk and bike along Park Avenue and its connecting streets. There are free public art installations, performances, and activities along the route. 5BBC has a decades-long relationship with this event where we pitch a tent, help repair bikes and invite attendees to learn about the Club. And we have a lot of fun in the process.
To volunteer, you can click the "Register Now" button, and I will find a time and task for you. If you want to request a specific time and task, take a look at available slots on Google Sheets athttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MHpwWBIiSBt0JgLhI04AeZGAK26rZPiCqk0TX0z9wpY/edit?usp=sharing. (Be sure you are viewing the tab for today's event.) Then let me know which times and roles you would like by emailing me at volunteer@5bbc.org. You won't be able to enter data directly into the spreadsheet, but I will update the spreadsheet at least daily.
Please let me know if you can do repairs such as flats, brake adjustments and gear adjustments.
Here are the other roles you can do:
Setup - Initial set up so that we are event-ready by 7 am. Includes setting up the mechanic stations, tables, tent, and hanging the banners. 6 am availability necessary.
Event Mgr - Oversees the days/shift events. Makes sure members are in the right places, ensures we have coverage in all areas, and reassigns members as necessary. Collects all paperwork at day's end. AM and PM event managers needed.
Marketing & Membership - Hands out business cards and talks up the club to passersby. Encourages guests to sign up and share any promotions e.g. $1 30-day membership. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Mechanics (seasoned & apprentice) - Service all bike issues from repairing on location to recommending a visit to any of our sponsored bike shops or other LBS if the repair is too extensive.
Pumps - Hand pumps deflated to underinflated tires to the proper PSI. May also perform very basic repairs e.g. fix a flat.
Queuing - Lines up and signs guests in for the line queue for bike repairs. Determines if the guest needs to see a seasoned or apprentice mechanic or go to the pump station. Pump station guests do not need to sign the mechanic's sign-up sheet.
Tables - Manages the tables as guests stop by asking questions, hands out business cards, and any promotional items which may be available. Keeps supplies ready for the marketing and queueing teams i.e. business cards, pens, sign-in sheets.
Takedown - Breaks down the setup (tables, tent, banners) after each day's event and makes certain the area is free of any trash/litter. Makes certain that the material is handed off to the member who will be storing it
We look forward to seeing you at Summer Streets!
